More Joel on Software: Further Thoughts on Divers

Glad to see they’re sticking with the theme. I’m assuming this is also the work of Gary Cornell.

The type sorta bugs me, but I might be whining. Love the concept and execution on these; timeless technology and, in this one, some humorous egocentrism.

hobbesian? i don’t get it.

Maybe the egocentrism thing would be more fitting for a Jakob Nielsen book (this page on his site says it all> http://www.useit.com/jakob/photos/).

When you do a straight rip like this, using the original source material unchanged and unaltered, It’s best to stay as true as possible. The type would have looked better if it imitated the original style. The red swash stuff feels slapped on.

This cover feels oddly disproportionate. The space provided for the text of the cover simply isn’t substantial enough; barring the possibility that this cover is around 20” x 30”. We’ve all been there graphically, I’m sure… wanting to use the perfect images for a cover and not being able to accommodate all the title, subtitle, and author text necessary. Most of us, I would think, find a better solution than what we see here. Is a monocle included to view that fine print?

And yeah, that title font is damn near atrocious. The Dutch Type Library has so many great fonts, why settle for one like this?

Also, I have no clear idea what this book is about. I enjoy the engravings for what they are, though.

In a similar contrast, the early Apple logo.

ugly continuation of a concept. This does not work. It will never work.

I find these quite funny. Really funny, in fact – even though I feel I don’t entirely get the joke.

I’ve always liked the Alasdair Gray version of the illustration

My art director would—rightfully—- throw this back at me and say “work on it” if she said anything at all.

Because it has that unmistakable feeling of. . . “hey here’s a funny idea that I threw together with some art that I Googled 30 seconds ago just to show in terms of concept-only—- see, juxtapose pre-Industrial artwork and the word software? get it? funny, right ?—- but for the real thing we’ll actually execute the idea right and make the whole work together.” But then didn’t.
