L & S caps for subtitle and that odd choice of italics (dangerously close to Apple Chancery) for author name botch up what otherwise would have been a good cover. The shadow under the bird is also not right. I heard the author on Fresh Air and was curious to see what the cover looked like – a bit of a let down.
euuu…nooo….
The book is about – according to amazon – the “natural history of the pigeon”, i.e it’s adaptabillity, cultural history etc.
Pumped up bodybuilders on steroids do not give me a sense of neither adaptabillity nor flexibillity.
And personally, I hate that Idea That You Should Put Initials In Front of Every Word. Agree on the italics, Hamish.
The illustration (great), title and border work well together, but then everything falls apart. The dingbat (dung-bat?) is, for me, one sight gag too far.

I like the detail of the little shit above the author’s name.
It’s terrific. Just terrific.
You’re right, they have a great website also.
Nice going, HBA. I’m jealous.

Photoshop. Bad type. Centered without purpose. No thought to any of the design or design elements. Just a lame, 1st idea image. Crap. Love this site. Confused as to why this jacket is even posted.

Very engaging and kinda cute. I like it! The gold graphic of pigeon poop is a nice touch, but agree that the use of italics for the author name leaves a bit to be desired.
An off white may have added clout here. The italic fount riles me.
Although the concept may have had relevance and a wit of sorts as a graphite pencil sketch this is falling short in execution. Why oh why oh why oh why oh why must the need for more than one typeface on a cover overtake the aesthetic?
Remember ‘the cover with the least on attracts the most attention’.
and ’ a simple typographic solution is the perfect pleasure’.

What has this to do with covers/aesthetics?
Lets keep all conversation relevant.

Good day!
It is very informative and has a very good quality in it.
I like it…
Superdove
One of those cases where if you were to describe it to someone, they’d never believe it was a decent cover, let alone a great one.
“I mean, its got a pigeon on it, except he’s super buff, and he’s got.. y’know, massive pecks.”
Great type, great photoshoppery, great gestalt.
Be sure and check out HendersonBromsteadArt. They do good stuff, and this cover seems to match their sense of humor perfectly.

I dunno. I find that pigeon to be freakishly creepy…
— GH , 2008-08-16 17:48:00 -0400
Hmmm… I don’t think I’d use the word “great” here.
Not as bad as the last cover. Just, innocuous.

I love that the ornament is a pigeon poo splatter!
— jW , 2008-08-17 05:40:00 -0400
hotdiggidydamn, that is a great illustarion.
the type is okay but nothing special.
— , 2008-08-17 14:33:00 -0400
Ok ok, “great” may be pushing it a bit far. I do like this cover, though!

That’s wonderful. Very funny. Not digging the chancery script face for the authors name. Out of place and unbalanced.

It’s ‘pecs’ dangit
— , 2008-08-18 07:10:00 -0400
But “pecks” is punnier, you have to admit…

Damn that looks like I rendered that shadow … ah but Winston-Salem I smell those Krispy Kremes coming off the line! HBA = nice studio

The simplicity is refreshing and the title is gorgeous.
