How many of you wanted to be in the army when you were a kid? I know I did. Water Gun Fights, G.I.Joes, Capture the Flag, repeat watchings of Rambo, and hours spent in my friend’s basement pitting Maximus Prime against Snake Eyes.
This cover does a wonderful job of conjuring up the romance of the military and then asking us to reevaluate it.
I’m not sure I understand the color choice for the text, as it seems to make it harder to read than necessary, (this is a small book, by the way, something like 5” high), but a great cover regardless.
I was in the reserves and I had a great time. Death is part of life get over it. Better to die doing something you love than to die doing something you hate.

It is of course better to die in bed at a ripe old age. You had a good time in the reserves because you didn’t get shot—and probably did not even get shot at. A dose of real combat cures romantic illusions, and this cover is a good way to show just how naively wrong the conceptions of civilians and “garritroopers” can be.

Way to assume there EddieT. I got shot at, blown up, you name it, and still enjoy my Reservist “garritrooper” job. I’m a Democrat but not a gutless hippy, and think Sheehan is a hack. Call them war junkies or romanticists, but you can’t honestly believe people have joined up without truly thinking about the worst case scenario. I think this book and cover would only appeal to the bitter mothers of those soldiers who joined even though they didn’t need to or have to—the ones who gave up college scholarships, who put their priveleged upbringing and trust funds on the line despite the frenzied begging of their mommies. The rest of the world doesn’t have the time to sit around and feel sorry for itself.

re: I think this book and cover would only appeal to the bitter mothers of blah blah
Readers do, of course, only prefer the content of books that reinforce their own opinions; so if this cover appeals to… mothers of… trustfunders? ... then you have to admit that it succeeds.

I thought we were about the book cover designs? If so, this one does it for me.

I think there probably should have been exactly 10 body parts, tagged and numbered.

For me it doesn’t really cut it. Where’s the design? I think there is some idea of a concept there, but IMHO the execution really lacks, especially the type.
agree with tobias and john. the type seems ill-considered. the type could have run over the image successfully if handled differently. not keen on the type choice either. the placement of body parts could have interacted with type better as well.

Re. the color of the type… blood, of course.
The whole thing is a bit too whack-you-over-the-head-with-it.

recently learned that this is a stock photo. Agreeing with others the type is weak. But, I liked it for the photo, and gave it some slack. Now, it’s lost even that.
Props to stock photographer though.

The photo is very good. It’s not only showing the physical harm but it seems to show something being broken. Maybe our dreams or our views.

this is a good design and appeals on many levels but is innocent enough for a female audience.
p.s. I do not speak for the ladies. i speak to my female emotional side;) Every designer has to have one…

Like it. Simple and effective. The type is a little harsh on the eye with the clash of green and red, but it also gives it that 3D feel (or is that just me?) Good concept

There is some concept here, and I like it enough I guess.. but it seems to me an overly obvious visual solution.
10 Excellent Reasons Not to Join the Military

I agree with Tobias. I think that it’s not enough to just say the design is “raw” and run the type right over the image. Great concept though

You love killing people? That’s sick.
