“Apocalypse 2012” would be a cool addition to this. Can’t say any of these do anything for me, but if I had to choose, with a laundry list (and I’ll be so so ultra kind to spare you of that) of the ones that are acceptable, I would say 1491 is pleasant, 1215 is fun, 1912 passes for the genre, 1453—nice typeface for the date. Everything else is not much to write about. What spawned this post?
it would have been interesting as a book but the design needs a complete makeover. too much space above the title. plus artificial use of BG, it looks modern. 1453 is better. the village illustration. looks like a cookie for me..or a pizza.
1491 is the prettiest typeface of the bunch, methinks. There’s something intriguing about the simple, stylized illustration – but I wish it was a little more mysterious – there’s something nicely primitive and spare about this cover – almost Blair Witch Project-y – that is, something evil lurking in the simplicity – something ominous and occult-ish. It seems to work better when the huge number is at the top rather than bottom, though 1453 has some nice touches to it.
1967 is good, but mainly cuz the soldiers are hot. The font is rather macho as well.
It’s nice. I like it… I’d pick it up if I happened to see it. That wouldn’t be solely based on the cover, though. I find the content potentially intriguing.
Of the covers Ben posted, the “1453” sticks out by far the best to me.
I’m full of suggestions. But mine have fallen short of what passes by the FWIS cover committee I guess. I’ve suggested many wonderful covers in the past….
A non-extensive list of covers with big dates on them, for no particular reason, (see below).

Interesting to see how the type faces relate to the time period. 1491 is delicious.

No 2001: A Space Odyssey?

1491 looks like a cereal box.

Wait, is this that movie with John Cusak?

Cover aside, 1491 is a superb work of popular science.
You left a few titles off your list, notably the excellentThe Year 1000, the fascinating1599 and the execrable1421.
Technically, it was only in the UK that the second book was called 1599; the subtitle took precedence in the US.
Note that I’m talking about the quality of the books themselves above, not their covers.

LOVE the way the picture/map on 1453 looks like a knight’s helmet. Great detail. 1491 can’t compare, there.

i wonder if aged surfaces look as good in print as they do on screen/real aged surfaces.

Kind of reminds me of a belgian beer label or the blonde version of 1664.

I like this cover verrrrry much. There is something appealing in it.
Antique look sought my eyes.
