As Mr. Gall mentioned the other day, Thomas M. Disch passed away last week. He was one of my favorite literary crazies; a cranky (but never spiteful) intellectual who wasn’t afraid to laugh at the other wise guys. I had been hoping to bump into him ever since moving to NYC, and I guess I missed that chance.
Here are three of his classic dystopians that got reprinted by Vintage a few years back. I hope that we get to see a first class reprint of his midwestern horror books someday.
Nice series application with the authors name, but the images do not feel like they belong to the series. 334 is the most moody and uncomfortable image for me. Like you’ve found yourself in some dingy apartment in front of this creep TV…
They should just do a solid redesign of all his books as a collection. A lot of his books are due for a redesign… This was a nice start by the talented Mr. Gaffney.
RIP to Mr. Disch. I’m afraid I’m not familiar with his work but I do like a cynical examination of society every now and again, so perhaps I’ll check him out.
I agree with Ian’s “redesign” idea. Speaking ill of the dead aside, these covers appear to be rather dated (late 90’s??) from the age of distress and techno music. They could do with a classic makeover that could propel them into a more timeless realm as, I assume, Mr. Disch’s writing deserves…
Worry not C-Dog, I’ve dumped my blurred type, heavy lozenge rules and Interstate font files into a lime green Karim Rashid trash can and sent it packing!
