I’ve been meaning to post these recent “comic book covers” for a while now. Clearly we’re witnessing a fad, but I’m willing to enjoy a trend while it lasts, and I think the particular ways they’re used is interesting.
Until sitting to write this post, I wasn’t even aware that Cross-X and Sweet and Low were done by the same team of Duzyj and Mitchell. I’m particularly crazy about the colors and spine of Cross-X. In both cases, the cover pushes “an amazing/unauthorized true story of [someone] from [somewhere humble] who [do something significant].” The covers are almost too much fun… I find myself wondering if I wouldn’t rather read a comic adaptation.
So those are pretty cool, but I’m blown away by Adverbs, by the novelist formerly known as Lemony Snicket. Each panel features a voice bubble that we can’t quite read — which reflects the collected theme of people who are stuck unsuccessfully trying to communicate which other.
Bookslut included Sweet and Low in their best covers of 2006 feature. Also I just realized that it uses the same palette as Sweet’N Low packets. shweet

Great cover, and a great book, too. This book really inspired me as a writer.

Anyone know what font is for the title?
— Chuck S., 2006-12-14 12:12:00
I’m sure the type must be hand-drawn. Daniel Clowes usually does all his titles by hand.

Excellent, excellent book. Someone stole the wraparound art from my copy, which is a pretty damn strong sign of good cover design.
