Here’s what I think for what it’s worth: the name Amy Hempel takes up the place where the tenth Amy and dog picture goes, but the black and white components taken from the third and ninth pictures (reading down the columns) together constitute the missing tenth picture. I imagine that it was also done this way to soften the cutting-in-half effect the vertical title space has on the page. As to exactly why this composition was chosen I also don’t understand
I really like this cover, but I’m positive that I don’t understand it.
The way the color works with the repeated photograph leads me to believe that it’s a subtle information graphic.
Can someone throw me a bone here?
