The photo selection definitely takes care of the ?dissapointment? aspect, but I feel like it comes up a bit short on the ?artist? side. I mean, unless there?s some story in there about a guy who walks around with a heat gun, melting little kids ice cream, in which case it?s good to go.

I agree it takes care of disappointment. I’m under the impression that it could be of the artist’s disappointment as a child.

not exactly. The book is a personal history, various essays on how he grew up and became a writer. The title essay is about his aunt’s experiences with a hyper-critical writing instructor. A lot of the rest of the book is about his mother’s death, so the cover image really, really works.

I think it captures the idea that the author is the artist of disappointment, meaning that he has mastered the ability to disappoint. I don’t think that the term ”art” as creation is implied.
Everyone should look at the paperback cover. It’s really beautiful.

If I were to describe the word “disapointment” with a picture this would deffinatly be it! I am an ice cream addict and to see it melt is most definatly disapointing!!!

It doesn’t just show disappointement, it’s positively depressing! Some of the memories of my childhood that most stand out are ones where I’ve dropped an icrecream or it’s melted. This picture will surely give me nightmares.
Haha. Of course I’m kidding. It’s very clever.

Seeing this actually made me feel sick. I’m not sure if that’s what they were going for, but I can barely look at this photo. It makes me feel a little queasy.
I agree with the above, though; nothing can be as quintessentially compared to disappointment as losing icecream as a child. Something so good that just slips from your fingers…isn’t that what disappointment is all about?
Oh, and those chocolate covered bars, like the one in the photo, are simply the best and the worst. They are such a mess to eat.
Not sure I’m a fan of the type treatment…but overall, I like it.
