Designer: Sean Tejaratchi

title: Do Me

author: Steve Almond

publisher: Tin House Books, 2007

available at Amazon.com

Another entry in the subliminal vagina collection.

Love the concept, hate the execution.

Agreed. But I did gasp. so….does it really matter?

Beth, 2007-12-30 13:08:00

doesn’t take much to shock you then huh beth. :P

typography is vile. plus it looks terrible because we can see the interiors of the other pages, and the ‘hole’ just shows blackness.

photosynthesize, 2007-12-30 13:33:00

god damn, truer words were never spoken, Eric

Martin, 2007-12-30 15:17:00

Mangages to bump Gomorrah as the second worst cover posted on this site. I can’t believe the designer manipulated (sorry but this is going to be difficult to express) the pages in the middle to really hit us over the head with his visual. Where is the subtlety?

subliminal: (of a stimulus or mental process) below the threshold of sensation or consciousness; perceived by or affecting someone’s mind without their being aware of it.

Subliminal this is not.

beauGeste, 2007-12-31 03:56:00

The type treatment blows. Damn, those would be some mean paper cuts.

ian shimkoviak, 2007-12-31 10:37:00

noteworthy

Jason Ramirez did a MUCH better version of this title…which didn’t get picked. His is also much more hilarious than this version. Check it out:

That’s a lot better than this. I don’t think subtle would suit these. There needs to be a level of “oh, I get it” without digging a hole in your head.

ian shimkoviak, 2007-12-31 14:40:00

Subliminal vagina? Between the title and the shape it hits you over the head. A little too obvious, though a “cute” idea nonetheless.

C Wys, 2008-01-03 00:46:00

This is spot on. The title is hardly subtle, so I don’t see why they cover should need to be.

That said, Jason Ramirez’s cover is nicer. The execution is much better.

Mr eel, 2008-01-03 14:46:00

The type treatment is something from the Young Adult section of a library in the early 90s. The page-gina has no softness or feminine qualities at all.

rek, 2008-01-04 12:59:00

Ramirez’s doggy-style books are accompanied by better secondary type than shown on Tejaratchi’s cover, however, both seem over the top for a combination of reasons. Tejaratchi’s concept is clever. Kudos.

Tim Belonax, 2008-01-06 23:54:00

Ramirez´s cover is not too subtle either (prettier, i agree), and tejaratchi´s rough execution suits perfect with the rough, imperative, urgent title. the fact of two books instead of one don´t seems right to me, conceptually speaking. maybe i´m too basic, but we´re talking about one book, not a collection.

juan, 2008-01-07 08:12:00

I recently walked by a bookstore display with this cover, and it practically leapt through the window. It has a very strong visual impact that’s so suggestive and clever. Getting noticed on a shelf is what this whole cwazy book business is about, like or lump the details of type and art.

wookie, 2008-01-08 08:35:00

Do me.

ba-dunk-a-dunk, 2008-01-10 11:17:00

We don’t understand this cover!!!! like waddaya mean? wtf does a curtain have to do with sex!!!!??
:3

sexayy johansson, 2008-01-10 11:22:00

very good concept in this cover design. i like that.

Mizanur Rahman Kachi, 2008-01-13 23:04:00

It is just me or is that typeface just inadequate?

Roy N., 2008-01-20 19:55:00

Roy N, i was going to say the same thing, this could have been such a powerful cover if it wasnt for the type, it just seems too asymmetrical for me- (sorry if that seems a stupid thing to say) but it doesnt really work for me. the image itself is inspired though; sex sells and all that!

Chris De Burgh, 2008-01-24 08:47:00

amazing

khokhar33, 2008-01-29 14:11:00

creative but… not exactly what i thourght a title like that should comprise of.

To be honest i’m quite disturbed!

Tammylee, 2008-02-09 18:24:00

I like the idea, but some many things bug me about the finished result, the typography the quality of the photo and i’d be to shy to read it on a bus or in public. I much prefer the subtlety and execution of Ramirez’s version.

roseanna, 2008-05-26 06:26:00

The type makes me want to me sick its that bad, i love the idea of the book being innocent but used in a different concept. Would work a lot better if type was different though.

palace, 2008-10-29 13:42:00

the cover jumped out at me, and that’s what it’s meant to do. no matter if you like the pic and type it made you take a look. so it did it’s job.

anthony l wallace, 2008-11-05 13:19:00

I think this is a great cover. The subtitle treatment is the only thing that really bugs. But ultimately Jason Ramirez version of this cover really does it for me. A lot more punch. In general his work is very nice.
