I find it interesting that the same two portraits were used for the four corners. My first impression was that there were four portraits, one per quadrant. The fact that the same two girls are repeated makes more sense, I think. Not only are the girls anonymous, but they’re disjointed as well.
The type seems to reference the public announcement treatments of the era. “Our Boys Take Down the Ruskies” type stuff.
I take my hat off to Gaffney for this one.

Can anybody spot what else that type is referencing? I feel like I’m missing something.

Love the concept of the highschool yearbook for an adoption novel…clever
An effective cover and concept. Not sure he had to underline the title—one degree of change is sufficient—but it does mirror the legal citing of the case.
...oh and the typeface? Futura.

Those are four different young ladies, it’s just that the styles of the time were more uniform (especially on picture day). The overall look was a response to the limited production abilities of a high school yearbook. The font is SuperGrotesk. Legal cases are generally italicized, but in this case an underline worked best—it’s common in pre digital type when specifying an italic could mean an extra cost and time to splice it in. The title was underlined to balance things out, and to allay concerns about the uniform title/subtitle size.
PS: Thanks FWIS!

Evan, is the design also based on Ann Fessler’s art? She’s a pretty sophisticated consumer of design and the designer of her own books. (Not to mention her sweetie is or was a Knopf designer.) And, if I remember correctly, her books are built of copy-dot halftones and simple lines of sans serif caps for captions. Just curious.
It’s a very nice jacket.

Ann was my college photography teacher, and she introduced me to photo based conceptial artists like Baldessari, Piper, Kelly, Kruger, and, naturally, herself. As I was working on this project I realized that it was she who inspired me the most as an artist and designer, and I truly thank her for it. With this in mind I felt confident in pushing the design in such a stark direction-I knew Ann would appreciate it. But the visual language of the cover is distilled from broader ideas of appropriation and minimalism. The halftone and sans typeface appear occasionally in her work, or the work of many artists and designers, for the same reason they appear here-they are inherent to the visual reference.
Everything about this design is wonderful, i completely love the concept!
