Containment of books is probably an ongoing problem for most readers of this site. What follows are the results of some of my digging around for really amazing bookshelves.
I tried to mostly collect shelves that are functional, but I had to start with the — shelf? collection? set piece? — that prompted this post, pictured left.
For the first time, the world’s most influential religious texts are brought together and presented on the same level, their coexistence acknowledged and celebrated.
A smartass like me can simply throw a copy of The Evolution of Species on top. See more pics at Mike and Maaike, buy it at Blankblank.
The Urbanworkshop Pogo Library is an integral part of the loft apartment of my dreams. It’s part of a whole line of similar open-space-friendly pieces.
The Lese+Lebe “portable reading room” initially struck me as questionably practical, but I have to admit that it can hold a decent library, and it would work really well in a “living pods”-type arrangement.
The Conceal bookshelf may not hold very many books, but besides being undeniably awesome, they’re cheap enough that you could afford to buy dozens.
Unalboler Studio’s “Salkim” hanging bookshelves are avant-garde, but also remind me of the neighborhood used-paperback store. Also check out their “Nar” coffeetable. (have fun navigating the flashturbation, though)
The Shelflife by Viable London comes with its own uncomfortable-looking chair. I’m not sure what the point of that is, but I bet it would look pretty hot after being filled with books.
The Etageres a livres is a fun way to keep houseguests constantly alarmed.
And finally, a bookshelf whose existence would be rendered irrelevent by actually filling with books — by Next Architects, more pics at Droog Design.
I do not claim that my bookshelves are the most practical, but them may be the most readable.
Contrary to many accusations, I do not judge books by their covers—I care more about their spines.
So sorry to disturb you that we are a derect manufactory specializing in shelves and cabinets, we can design and produce, so if you have any needs, pls let me know!

Ignore him; as long as you keep it book-related.
— rek, 2006-12-18 11:08:00
Ditto rek and m.khan. I’m a bit of a nut for imaginative book display options, and I’ve only seen half of these products before.
