If anyone has seen this in person, let me know. I’d be curious to hear what you think of it. I’ve found that, when printed, fake drop shadows usually look poor for effects like this.

I like the way it’s convex or concave.
You can never see both but it dances back and forth
If you’ve been to a press run you’d notice that the black ink is not opaque and actually look sort of weak.
The printer will add the other 3 process
colors and try to acheive a neutral gray.
It’s not easy.
I could go on and on… I bet you have a printing expert close by.

The copy I saw looks very similar to the online version (with the usual print v. pixel differences).
Was surprised that it was designed by John Gall.
I think the concept is that it’s a false die-cut to represent a “kept” book, locked behind the illustration.
at first I didn’t care for this at all, but after a couple more looks it starts to get my mind wondering what’s locked up in that castle? The vague title also leaves it open and mysterious.
works for me.
I’m think it’s a really cool cover, and represents:
a. the mood of the book well
b. the experimental narrative
(i’ve read the book, and it’s told from the perspective of a writer who is writing a book…it’s meta, and so the cut out is supposed to represent the manuscript of the book that’s being ‘written’)

I really, really like this, but I don’t know why. I wish I had more useful critique!
Sorta, I wonder how it would look if the title box were smaller, or maybe off center? Could be way off.

The Keep
I don’t *get* it, but it sure is striking.

Keep. n. the innermost and strongest structure or central tower of a medieval castle

Gall did this? huh.
Now I’d definitely like to see it in person.

Err… ok? It’s fine on the web but I can’t imagine it looks very striking in person.
How come it doesn’t say the designers name under the book to the left here?
— , 2006-09-18 20:33:00 -0400
Because I didn’t know who designed it.

Another John Gall type box – but with a twist!

The box serves as a metaphor: the title and author text represent are the stronghold’s keeper. A top-down perspective possibly?

IMHO it looks excellent in-hand. I find it really striking.
