John Gall was kind enough to send over this illustration/collage he and Ned Drew collaborated on in response to the Amazon Kindle.
The piece was rejected, apparently. (What?!)
The dynamic duo of Gall and Drew are also responsible for the absolutely gorgeous Kobe Abe book covers. You might also recognize Drew’s name from his work on By It’s Cover.
Chad I thought this sort of thing was very similar to the sort of abstraction you’re interested in. I doubt the representational parts need any sort of explanation, but your comment sure does.
Also, this wouldn’t be as awesome without the pipe, which, for what its worth, is probably the best book accessory in the world, besides perhaps a loyal and purring cat.
Chris, the iconography is obvious, so I guess I should have said “why,” instead of “what” to be more clear. “What” or “wut” are types of Internet expressions to represent the general randomness or pointlessness of a given topic.

Something else to love John Gall for.

It’s cute, but, what?

like it except the pipe. the pipe looks nice but why a pipe? sitting on an armchair reading a hardcover and smoking your pipe?
— rekya , 2007-12-03 17:27:00 -0500
Pipe is a reference to “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” by Magritte.

i think it’s pretty rude to say that it’s ‘obvious’. just because one person is a ‘genius’, doesn’t mean everyone is.
magritte reference is brilliant, but i don’t think it’s exactly accessible to the masses.

“This is much better looking than the kindle itself is.”
Hear, hear. Really nice.
Unfortunately, the people at New York mag wanted the actual gizmo in there apparently.

it would have never sold or had as wide an appeal with this artwork. It’s cool. Rauschenbergy… not too original in that regard.
