we do book cover design

Designer: John Gall

title: The Last King of Scotland

author: Giles Foden

publisher: Knopf, 1961

available at Amazon.com

This cover is such a good example of concept as selling point. The aesthetic itself is really not that memorable or striking, but the combination of the portrait of a black man with this particular title is going to pull any casual viewer in for a closer read.

This point is made even more obvious when compared to the ho-hum redesign for the paperback edition.

I also love how Gall forces you to consider the portrait by placing the photo between the words of the title.

this is so weird, because i at first had thought it was chip kidd, but finding it was john gall, i wonder if chip found his inspiration for his jacket for ‘The Last Modernist,’ from this…

wow, totally geeked out there, but i’m a design student and am so into these guys. (drool) alright, Lauren, put down the wine…

ps i don’t mean, ‘inspiration’ per sey, because obviously there is enough inspiration in the books themselves, but more that i wonder if sub-consciously chip was influenced by gall.

Awesome.
