The Last Three Miles

As many times as this schtick has been done..

I have to say it never gets old.
Though I will note that the newspaper doesn’t continue over on to the spine, which is a bit of a downer.

I’d say it just got old. And is that a high resolution digital photo on that 1932 newsprint? I like the background color a lot, but not enough to warrant all that empty space. I bet the reason the newspaper is situated so low in the design and doesn’t wrap around to the spine is because someone didn’t want to take the time to cook up the extra filler copy.

What the heck kind of quote is “The construction of the Pulaski Skyway is a new kind of link”? Never mind the poor grammar (construction is not a link…the skyway might be): What does “a new kind of link” mean? A terrible choice for such a prominent place on the cover.

Wow, I didn’t even notice what that quote said until you pointed it out. Bizarre.

Oh, and I pretty much agree with PF, besides liking the effect of the unusually placed image.
Additionally, why is the ink so richly black on such aged-looking paper? Every example you link to does the newspaper schtick better.

I’m officially tired of the newspaper trick.

I completely disagree with mike. The newspaper thing is great effect. If it work, why not?

It’s not a book about newspapers. That’s why this doesn’t work.

The covers that use the old newspaper shtick to good effect are, not surprisingly, about newspapers. This book is about “politics, murder” and a bridge. Not newspapers. Personally, I find this cover is a first-round comp that should have been shot down for more compelling directions.

is the gold standard for using a newspaper as a cover image. In my opinion. If you can’t beat it, concept-wise, then find a better idea, I say. Because the newspaper one is officially a cliche.

Most of us here, I wager, could do better in under 5 minutes.

The idea isn’t original in any regard, and I echo everything PF said.
