Designer: Greg Mollica

title: The Memory Keeper's Daughter

author: Kim Edwards

publisher: Penguin (Non-Classics), 2006

available at Amazon.com

The novel centers around the act of a father delivering his daughter in the middle of a snowstorm, and then giving her away due to her having Down’s Syndrome, (apologies to the author for brutally slaying the story line. I just wanted to communicate that the whole thing is a bit off.)

The cover beautifully conveys a sense of loss and the etherial. It’s a composite of two different photos: the shot of snow comes from Rey Mehta at Getty, the dress was shot by Liz Magic Laser.

And truthfully, I’m not super hot on the type treatment, it looks to me like it wasn’t really sure what to do with itself. But the photography carries the cover through to the memorable.

With the dress centred, the type shouldn’t be. Does the title stand out on the cover in real life? It’s being swallowed by the black in this image.

i definitely think that the type should be centered with the dress, otherwise they would compete with each other. i think it would look awesome without the white snow on the bottom, and just some snow flakes floating around. the bottom half just seems a little bit too busy in comparison to the top.

Personally I like the bottom of the image very much… it’s actually the dress that ticks me off. I appreciate the floaty-ness and the ‘where’s the baby’ aspect but it doesn’t look like a dress for a newborn baby – it looks like it might go on a three-year-old, and… Oh, I don’t know. I just think the dress ought to be tidier, I suppose.
Why isn’t the title text white? Or pale blue? That would look better.

I actually thought this was shot underwater before i read the comments. But it isn’t i suppose. Which is fine.
