I agree. When you try to include every race possible in a photograph, it tends to look like a cheesy stock shot. The illustration gives it character and a uniqueness that photography can’t.
I’m not sure about the vertical black strips though.

I’m so glad someone said something about the vertical black strips. I realize they connect the horizontal boxes but they disrupt the image in the background unnecessarily.
Perhaps if the horizontal blocks had the same dimensional ratio as the rows of faces, they might not stand out as much… I agree with the comment bout the illlustration – the faces all blend together nicely to give the impression of a greater whole. Still a nice cover.

nice color pallete. and the type choice fits the illustrations well. i’m against the vertical strips.
oh my, very similar to the Illustrators cover, but still nice, altho I’m not totally delighted with the treatment and placement of those black panels. I wish that they all somehow worked with the grid of the photos. Subtitle is a bit unresolved as well.

I don’t know, I kind of like the black boxes. Visually reinforces the concept of “mixed” to me. Things overlapping and not lining up where you’d expect.
I think it’s kind of sharing with us what’s in the book a little boring but I like it
