The Noodle Maker: A Novel

Honestly, beyond the fact that this is a nice looking cover, I think I’m most impressed by the fact that the publisher was willing to go with such a subtle title treatment.

Obviously the scenes on the stacked bowls refer to incidents in the novel!

Eh… looks like something I’ve seen 50 times previous.

C-Dog , 2007-02-15 12:38:00 -0500

I kind of love it. And I agree with Ben that the title is surprisingly subtle (yay, Picador!). To me, the rising white fog towards the top of the stack makes me think of steam wafting off a nice bowl of noodles. And the whiteness of the title, along with the knock-kneed curves of “The” and “a novel” help keep the noodly vibe going.

Or it could be that I’m just really hungry right now.

Either way, a nice cover.

, 2007-02-15 17:58:00 -0500

It would be nicer without the patterned corners. With them, its like C-Dog says, we’ve seen this 50 times before…

, 2007-02-15 22:23:00 -0500

i dont think patterned corners make a cover seen 50 times before …

, 2007-02-16 15:58:00 -0500

C-Dog, i was just reading through some of your comments from previous covers, and, well, you’re obnoxious.

nottomention that you’re a bit of a wuss to be so meticulous and proficient in your cooments of late and not attach an email address w your “name”.

pozer , 2007-02-16 16:08:00 -0500

The borders emphasize the Asian theme more eloquently. Who cares if they’ve been used before if it helps to communicate and strengthen the message.

On an off-note, I like C-Dog’s word “designgasm” in a previous post.

Chuck S. , 2007-02-16 17:53:00 -0500

I would like to see some of C-Dog’s work before he makes his next comment.

Heh… call me crazy, Pozer, but it seems a tad more obnoxious to call someone out. gives pozer a hug I love you. You cranky bastard.

Mike: since when do we have to accomplish something in order to have an opinion of others’ accomplishments? If that’s the case, I doubt criticism would exist. pats Mike on his posterior It’s all good, baby.

Art folk… so temperamental.

I just don’t think this cover is exceptional. The orange-to-yellow gradient is applied to the image of the bowls as though it was just slapped on top. The treatment of text is-err-safe, at best. I can easily list dozens of identical covers (image in the middle, gradient surrounding it, simple text on top and below it) but I’m already boring myself.

It’s not a repulsive cover, just not exceptional in any way.

-Peace?

C-Dog , 2007-02-19 01:49:00 -0500

I’ll have to side with C-Dog. It’s elegant, nice and balanced, but it lacks originality. But that works for the audience—and the bottom line is—it passed the grueling approval process of the Author, her dog, a board of square sales people (no offense) and finally the publisher. But it works. I’d have to read the book—but at a glance it works.

, 2007-02-19 03:00:00 -0500

I wouldn’t really consider “Eh… looks like something I’ve seen 50 times previous” to be criticism. Pats C-Dog right back on his posterior.

— mike , 2007-02-19 03:12:00 -0500

Yeah! And 50 times before is not necessarily a bad thing—if something works and it’s beautiful—hell, lets try it again! Imitate—don’t be shy about it. As Bruce Mau says—You’ll never get all the way there and the separation might truly be remarkable. Imitation is an underused technique.

And as we all know—we’ve all done it to some extent. Jeez, at this point in history it seems that just about everything has been done—over and over and over. Let it be the 51st time this has been done. Nay—the 1000th!

, 2007-02-19 09:05:00 -0500

Not criticism, Mike? You sure? There are quite a few implications in my initial comment, but people choose to ignore what they wish. This is a fairly casual setting wouldn’t you say? Considering we can’t see each other and you know me based only on my 4-letter name. heh… Chillax.

C-Dog , 2007-02-19 09:51:00 -0500

It is elegant, beautiful colors, however a little too balanced with the 4 corners and the stack exactly centered… maybe it had to reflect the story but I would love to see it pushed askew somehow.

it’s’ ok. kind formula, like something i’ve already seen, but it’s totally PRETTY and harmless. not a book that i would pickup and want to read, but that’s ok. It’s very pretty.

i want to see your cover books again.

, 2007-03-25 15:36:00 -0400

I see this book and I think: yellow, asian, noodles. If I couldn’t read english, I’d think exactly the same thing. My problem with this is that the design is basically an exact repeat of all the text on the cover. Where’s the tension? It’s too flat.

, 2007-03-30 08:28:00 -0400

I think it’s gorgeous. It’s nicely restrained. I really like the gradient moving through the bowls. Isn’t orange a “hunger color”? I have this strong feeling of food, even though there is none in the image.

The designer could have really pushed the “Asian theme” to cliche’, so I find this to be a unique solution, personally, but I’m still a design student so I’m probably really wrong.

, 2007-05-12 10:52:00 -0400

I think it’s nice but a little bland. Not very memorable but not objectionable. Just nice, pretty. It needs something more than that to make me want to pick it up. I’m not in the ‘biz in any way.. just a reader and a consumer- so, without any expertise, it’s just my humble opinion that it’s OK and nothing much more.
