On Fishing

Gorgeous.
Anyone know who designed it?

(I’m surprised the title isn’t “On Fly Fishing.” I wonder if it’s a subtle jab at the other kind of fishing, as though it were so inferior it’s not even worth including in the classification.)

I think it honestly could have done without the fly in the center.

“I think it honestly could have done without the fly in the center”? Chris, why do you think they call it “fly fishing”? Actually, I’m pondering if they should have added four more flies at the ends of the other lines, or would that be overkill? What do you think?

, 2008-01-20 04:48:00 -0500

I really don’t like this. The lines coming off the “On” and “Br” seem really clumsy to me.

Jeff , 2008-01-20 05:23:00 -0500

Edit: Or rather, off the “On” and the “Cl”.

Jeff , 2008-01-20 05:24:00 -0500

I really like this treatment – it visually represents fly fishing very well. I do wonder also about the lack of “fly” in the title…I think Ben is right, it is a snob thing.

can someone id the typography?

ana , 2008-01-21 02:33:00 -0500

It’s definitely engaging and fun to look at. Gotta be a custom job (obviously for the strings coming off the type) for the typeface. The base mood of the face is like didot or Bauer Bodoni—after that it just gets too custom. There is a clumsiness to the execution on certain parts, but I think that’s kind of the energy that makes this so fun. The string is swinging all over the place. I would have liked seeing the authors name smaller, but this is very powerful and dramatic to take in.

guhhhhh that would have been total overkill.

I love these ‘execution as idea’ concepts. Well done.

dave , 2008-01-21 05:53:00 -0500

Absolutely gorgeous, is my opinion.

I love it.

, 2008-01-21 11:48:00 -0500

So okay, who’s the designer?

, 2008-01-21 11:50:00 -0500

I wonder if the repetition of the idea makes it a little too clumsy? The line off the ‘h’ would have made the point eleganty

David MacGregor , 2008-01-21 16:37:00 -0500

This is one of those covers that once you’ve seen the solution you can’t even consider another possibility – perfect!

dd , 2008-01-22 01:37:00 -0500

Beautiful. Love it.

, 2008-01-22 02:11:00 -0500

I wholeheartedly agree with David…I love the idea, but the multiple lines are too much. In fact, part of the beauty of fly fishing is the solitude of it, and this looks like a fishing trip in Grand Central Station.

I think one line would have done it.

Great cover. And w/o the fly it wouldn’t mean anything.

Mark Thomson is credited as designer

As an instructor used to beat into my head: “Use one hook.”

And only one hook.

In this case, literally, only one was needed . . . or one “line and hook”. So, while aesthetically pleasing with all that swash action going on there, all but one of these lines were unnecessary to the “concept”, and I feel the design would have been much stronger and more direct and less precious without them.

I was the designer, and Marian Bantjes did the lettering.

çok iyi(very good)

anna , 2008-02-28 03:25:00 -0500

Fun! I think it could use a slightly lighter weight in the letters, and a sl. smaller fly. Good, though.

, 2008-05-20 11:11:00 -0400

It’s really good.
