The Rebels

Not to jock Mendelsund too hard, but I saw this in the store yesterday.

The backwards E really makes it. It could have been a fairly ho-hum design but then your eye gets sucked into that E and you’re left with a strong impression of “zuh?”

There two more (incomplete) symmetries (or reflections) as well (in terms of consonant pattern and word length):
Rebels Embers
Sandor Marai

Plus the multi-faceted symmetry of the ornament.

Sorry, my English fails me – vowel patterns, of course: E-E + E-E
A-O + A-AI

Nice touch setting the ’s’ in a different face, too

Assuming the slight gradient from dark blue to lighter blue is not a trick of photographing the cover, I think that makes the cover pop like hell.

I love, love, love the treatment of boarders and fancy designs. It works. Not too much, not too little, jusssst right.

The use of several different fonts is VERY risky, but because the cover is all about the fonts being framed and highlighted, it works here. I like the treatment of the title and the author’s name. And the supporting text works great too. Nothing works against any other element, it all jives.

It’s delicate, striking, yet somehow maverick. I enjoy this cover much more than the last 25 or so that have been posted.

*Hard to believe the same designer created the last posted book cover, “House of Meetings,” which I despise greatly. I guess he’s a volatile craftsman.

Positive feedback from C-Dog. Let us all rejoice.

Thank you Ben, I mean N.

If I had beef with your comments, I’d just delete them. Don’t get ahead of yourself.

I’m really a shy, loving boy in person… who likes long walks on white sandy beaches and reading the Bible by firelight.

C-Dog , 2007-03-31 09:51:00 -0400

I like it all; there’s delicacy and balance and a beautifully controlled colour palette.

ah, another Peter cover. Always a pleasure. Great type treatments. Looks like a lot of fun with the ornaments. Over all, this cover looks like a novel about Victorian era writers who wrote about taboo subjects—you know, like flipping “E”s and making them smaller than everything else, centering everything, and diving into your bag of old ornaments for the thousandth time.

Nice.

C-Dog is always a pleasant contributor. Nothing positive to say, probably a reflection of a failed design career.

John has issues…

Somehow makes the victorian decorative stuff fresh again – nice

andrew , 2007-04-15 14:23:00 -0400

Victorian // Fresh.

That E is such a wonderful design moment. Nice stuff. Wouldn’t change a thing.

Ned Wright , 2007-04-26 03:48:00 -0400

That sans serif used for the author’s name is used in almost every Carol Devine Carson design I’ve ever seen. It must be the House Sans Serif for Knopf. Can anyone confirm this? [This is not to say I don’t love the design, but by now one can spot a Knopf title from across a crowded room.]

Christian in NYC , 2007-05-25 06:12:00 -0400

Oh, I’m so jealous of how he pulled this all together so beauifuly. Victorian, modern and dare I say rebelious?
I think he’s a genius.
And yes I would like to know the name of the Knopf sans serif.

That E is such a wonderful design moment. Good going very well and well done

khokhar33 , 2008-01-29 09:07:00 -0500

“And yes I would like to know the name of the Knopf sans serif.”

That’s almost certainly Trade Gothic Condensed Bold—a classic.
