golly, I’m shocked that you guys don’t dig this one, it’s so classic 40’s. It looks nothing like Dali, nor is it trying to—he’s hardly the only surrealist painter, you know.
Also the painting itself (weird spermy plants and impossible-looking creatures) is directly applicable to the subject matter—see his writing regarding the “blind watchmaker” parable.

i agree with you regarding the choice of painting but the typography must have taken all of 10 minutes.

A cover more suited to a 1st anniversary edition. Not something for the 21st century I’m afraid.

But check out the kerning. Is that carelessness or something else? Maybe we overthink these things; maybe he was POed at the sales rep trying to design the freakin’ cover. Sometimes designers smile and get their revenge in quiet ways. bwahahahha

I love this cover; like Eric J notes, the organic Yves Tanguy style perfectly suits the subject matter. And the “not for the 21st century” misses the point entirely; this is the same painting that appeared on the US edition I bought decades ago. Hello? 30th anniversary, anyone?

Makes me think of Hieronymus Bosch and Salvador Dali having an acid party

i don’t like that fleshy colored text at the top.By the way, is there something Yellow Submarine-ish about the art, or is it just me?

The typography really is awful. To me, this screams for an art deco font.

It's a reproduction of a painting by Dawkins's friend Desmond Morris, the expectant valley. He choose (and bought the original painting) because of its extraterrestrial 'feeling'. Dawkins believes that life, terrestrial or extraterrestrial, is a darwinistic phenomenon.

I’m not particulary fond of it or anything, but I’m not quite getting what’s so terribly wrong with it… perhaps someone would like to enlighten me?
