From their site: “Droog is a brand and a mentality: design of products that do what they should and think about why they’re doing it in the first place: function? fun? wit? criticism? All of the above?”

This book is an anthology of their last 10+1 years worth of work. I love this cover for a number of reasons.

1) Droog has the midas touch. So, by default, I love everything they do. Ha.

2) The stacked, shrinking boxes reference fractal geometry. Which applies perfectly to Droog’s design as the majority of their products are fractally conceptual.

3) They hired another one of my favorite dutch design firms, Thonik, to do this cover. An automatic bonus.

4) There are, in fact, ten+1 boxes on there. No small task, I’m sure.

5) The chapter openers in the book follow the same schtick as the cover, in that the paragraph opener is dissected by the boxes, and in each subsequent box, you zoom out a little more from the text. Truth be told, I feel like I’m missing something here. While I’m fairly certain it has to do with, again, fractal geometry, and looking closer and closer at what you’re doing, I have this sneaking suspicion that there’s something else there as well. Regardless of concept, it’s a great gimick.

You’re looking at the Golden ratio…

Haha. D’oH!
I hate missing something so obvious.

Ben Pieratt, 2006-02-22 20:37:00

ok I’m going to play dumb….I think I know what the Golden Ratio is, but would a nice individual like to explain?

GraphicTechsan, 2006-03-30 16:22:00

Alright, I hate to be smartass, but this is NOT the Golden Ratio you’re looking at. There’s nothing “golden” about splitting a rectangle in the middle. If you want to know what the Golden Ratio really is, go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_ratio

I’m not sure how large this actually is.. but I am pretty sure that it relates to ISO paper sizes, the book being A4 maybe.

ISO paper sizes is what I immediately thought, from someone who wouldn’t know, but then paper sizes have been on my mind
