Supercapitalism

The type is a little boring, but even if it’s the simplest design imaginable, I can’t fault it for being too simple.

I like the concept, but it would be a bit more engaging and thought out if it was perhaps a vintage illustration of a snake blown up accross the cover and stabbed with a stake—to show the historic roots of capitalism and that it’s not born of some contemporary reality—which the type and general graphic style suggests.

oh, and the snake tongue gets lost. It would have been nicer if it was a bit more bolder and sharper…aggressive…

Ian Shimkoviak , 2007-12-19 07:59:00 -0500

the snake tongue is a bit weak; strange how it goes off to the side, at odds with the head. just doesn’t seem so super. at least they didn’t go with the obvious superman logo with a dollar sign (or couldn’t risk copyright infringement).

Designed by Carol Devine Carson.

It is a good idea, but maybe it would have worked better with only the dollar/snake logo, and no type. Or maybe if the type was necessary, it could have worked better with a real snake posing for the S in $? Just to give it more dimensionality. Embossed!

Thanks GH!

Also, this is the oddest bunch of suggestions and comments we’ve ever gotten on this blog.

Ben Pieratt , 2007-12-19 09:17:00 -0500

Oh, I beg to differ. I think the daisy suggestion on Beowolf pretty much topped it…

Ian Shimkoviak , 2007-12-19 09:23:00 -0500

Idea = okay. Execution = pissy. Not much else to say really. It’s just so incredibly lacking…........ In a minimalist mood, Ben and Eric? Let me guess, both of your apartments are white and black without much wall art, am I right?

i think it’s a good idea too. and i find the simplicity attractive and elegant. the snake tongue is a subtle, yet smart touch. it’s adds an additional dimension to the otherwise straight-forward title and subtitle, simple design and what might be perceived as a dull subject; an opinion is expressed without knocking the reader over the head.

Well the concept is plain and simple. Hard to miss. Until you insert the snake element…oh, that’s the concept? I didn’t see the snake at all. Took me a couple seconds. Oh well.

I agree with Jason – elegant, smart solution to something that could have looked very mass-market.

I thought Peter Mendelsund designed this one?

I thought for sure this was Peter Mendelsund too…

I made a mistake, sorry – it was Peter. Don’t know why I thought it was CDC…

Beautiful cover-that would stop me in a bookstore. This begs to be opened. However, it took me a few seconds to figure out that the red stringing thing was a snake’s tongue-and it does look like an after thought.

Next time, just leave the tongue off and add some extra S’s to the title.

I love the simplicity of this. At least the ”$.” The type annoys me a little. Why do most of the books in the Current Events section have these white, minimalist, red-spot-color covers? It’s a phenomenon, really.

Also, I like these new tabs.

Andrea Guinn , 2007-12-21 10:45:00 -0500

I love the trend of these straight-to-the-point, no-frills white covers. They catch my attention in a bookstore brimming with color covers, and they give a “no BS” impression.

too simple to be a book cover.

I agree with what you said, Ben. This cover is arresting.
