The Quick and the Dead
This is one of those "I wish I did that" moments. The hourglass that covers the cover and envelopes the title also reads seamlessly as an ampersand. Beautiful, subtle, and strong execution seems to be the MO of the Walker Art Center design team. Check out more of Chad's work here.

extreme modernism. Obviously this looks dated and like nothing that you would find at a local bookstore—perhaps in the archive of the old town library. I like it. Beautiful and subtle it is. Is it a novel or a historical work?

It's nice. It looks so familiar, yet I can't help but think it's punching some new buttons.
Looks like something I'd find at the biannual thrifty book sale here in my town... Something some old academic pulled off of one of the hyper-packed bookshelves in his mid-century study.
Not sure what the hell the book is, but I guess that's what flaps, backs, and spines are for. What can I say... we Chads are an amazing lot.

It covers an exhibit at the Walker Art Center that "takes stock of the 1960s and 70s legacy of experimental, or 'research' art by pioneers like George Brecht... and Lygia Clark..."

And here I thought it was about the Jimi Hendrix experience...

Thank you for the great comments thus far. A big inspiration for the design of the book and it's cover came from two of the writings included in the catalog. One by Oliver Sacks which talks about the human condition and how different circumstances affect how we perceive time. The other an excerpt from John McPhee's book Basin and Range, in which he writes about history according to geological time.

I can't lie — some of what Chad explained about this cover went over my head. But I think that is one of the unique challenges of this kind of work. The constraints of main stream publishing are different than the constraints that Chad may face at the Walker Art Center. I think it can be easy to say that this work is easier, without the complex bureaucracy that you might deal with at Harper, Random House, or Penguin. But the challenge here is to represent something that may be completely esoteric and abstract in a way that is accessible. The communications may be more subtle, dealing more with tone than content. And I'm sure it can be sometimes difficult to wrap you head around the material and translate it into a cover.
At least that is my take on it. Any insights Chad?
