This first struck me on the shelf due to its similarity to our own cover for The Theocons. But to leave it at that would be doing the cover a disservice.
I like the graphic, I like the layout. I like everything about the aesthetic, really. What’s bothering me about this cover is that it doesn’t seem to represent the book that well. The book itself is an analysis of the US’s position in the world, and how it is viewed by non-Americans. From what I can tell, it’s a fairly positive review of the country, calling Europeans out on the logical flaws in their arguments and promoting the US as a “we could do a lot worse” super power. Whereas this cover, with it’s stark contrasts and aggressive, military-inspired lines, seems to speak of aggression and arrogance and nothing more.

The title does a disservice to the content (which I’m glad you included) as well. To me, it speaks to the same aggressiveness and arrogance as the the cover treatment.

i second that. all of it.
Hopefully we won’t have to comment on this one for more than a day or I’ll cry.
What would be nice, is if we could see all the concepts that were done for this one, and hear about the process and evolution a bit. Now that would be redeeming and do justice.
Hmmmm. I would also like to see the concepts that were rejected. This has editor approved written all over it.

Love the graphic, particular in conjunction with the theme of the book… I like that use of whiteness as well, but they’ve got to do something about the font.
The font is all wrong, IMO. It’s illegal to use anything so closely resembling Arial (or Times New Roman)...... Microsoft raped and destroyed those fonts for all posterity. Also, the arrangement of the text is a bit template-esque. Looks like they highlighted the text line and typed their stuff in.
I’m not really getting aggression. More like naive positivity. I really enjoy simple covers, like this…the idea pops out. However, judging by your review it might be skewed slightly off topic.
Another thing that bothers the eye with this cover is that it is so unnatural to see the flag in this position, so you don’t get the idea that there is anything positive about it. Like a country on it’s back or something. I’d have preferred to see it at a logical 45• angle and a lot bigger bleeding off. Now that would have impact. I’ve sent Ben what I mean.
imo, they could have just stopped with stars in the umlaut and left it at that. i think it’s a really nice/clean choice that could have held up on its own in better hands.
otherwise, they should have made the flag more graph-like to match the analytical content a bit more (maybe what they were going for in the first place).

I think it’s a great cover. Simple and to the point. If you over-analyze it, you’ll ruin it, as most of you already have.

Helvetica is now a faux pas? Goodness.
— Ben Pieratt , 2007-09-10 09:22:00 -0400
Yeah, it can be pretty lame… particularly when used like this.
Though I would venture to say that any font could work in some capacity if it’s used with a modicum of ingenuity.

Given your description of the book I feel the tagline is a lot more misleading than the graphic or layout.
Perhaps the cover is catering to the kind of person who will buy this book expecting a certain slant? The No Logo crowd and suchlike.

Looks like a tribute to the Blue Angels.

Yeah!! Blue Angels! Long live the short post.

Here’s a Fletcher/Forbes/Gill cover design for Pelican, 1970. The hand drawn effect seems more approachable, but seem to work well.
