Not especially memorable until it is pointed out to you that the name John is spelled out through subtle emphasis. (“John” being the name of Didion’s husband, whose death is the subject of the book.)
Thanks to Sara Goldsmith for the find.

It seems to be a rephrase of Milton Glaser’s design for an earlier book by the same author – “Fixed Ideas: America Since 9.11 ”.
Salman Rushdie’s “Furu”, a new (Oct 2006) book from Random House brings the successful formula (vanilla background + large yet light text spread over the cover + letters set in two colors) further. Do Joan Didion and Salman Rushdie have something common, as writers? God knows! I have not read any of their books. Yet now they have somewhat similar design on their books.
This is an elegant typographical and conceptual success. It honors Didion’s exceptional career with a respect for both her stature and the seriousness of this volume’s subject. May there always be a place for strong, clean elegance in design! This cover proves that the most enduring qualities of design are ever welcome, and often less complex than we might assume they need be.

Both designs are excellent. This one shows that a good idea can be built upon!
