Zeno?s Conscience is a classic work of modernist literature written in 1923. At the behest of his psychiatrist, the main character, Zeno Cosini, begins writing his ?confessions.? This takes us on a journey through his warped and self-deluded mind. He is also engaged in an endless pursuit to quit smoking. I just realized that the original request from editorial was to design a cover showing a scenic Italian vista. Oops.

As described by John Gall to the AIGA.

I was originally going to complain about how the scribbles made it look like his head was on fire, but then I read the above quote, and it turns out that the scribbles have the aformentioned double entendre. Bravo!

I think this is very special. A punk asthetic used on an old sepia like picture is a nice mix of the old and the new. It’s the kind of thing I love to see getting through the cover design process.

I love this. The green/sepia is beautiful. Reminds me of a little rebel grafitting in a book or something.

Um….. Dont you think the scribbles could have been executed a little better? Looks like the designer used a mouse to do it. I would have liked to see it done with an actual pen/marker/pencil/whatever.

I absolutely have always loved this cover—if only for the scribble…

i love the idea and everything but the scribble… I actually read the book and it does reflect it very well:)
